aNNUAL PLAYER competitive program summary

A review of the past of the organization and curricula of our competitive programs along with player/parent surveys indicated the necessity to change the organization and coaching structure.

The plan being implemented is built upon several key points:

Players need a better technical foundation - The foundation of a soccer player is their technique. Coaches will consistently reinforce techniques to give players more confidence with the ball.

Developmentally appropriate teaching of skills and tactics - individual, group (backs, midfielders, forwards) and team.

Players need to strive to win - in both training and game environments.  This should be a result of the PLAYERS' desire and initiative - NOT from the PARENTS' or the COACHES'.

Coaching staff's primary focus is on development of the individual player - This in the long run will produce success at the appropriate ages.

The plan includes the following:

1) Creating a fun-learning environment.
If players are having fun and learning, they will be engaged in the sport for a longer period.

2) Training (practice) to Match ratio.
In order for players to develop, they need a greater amount of touches on the ball. Studies have indicated that, in a normal training session, players will touch the ball between 200-400 times. In a match situation, players touch the ball on average between 40-60 times.

3) Quality competition rather than quantity of competition.
The coaching staff will be looking at attending the appropriate level of tournaments, as well as the total number of tournaments the teams will be attending. The vast majority of our teams are playing too many games, which changes the focus away from technical development and places a greater emphasis on tactical and fitness preparation.

4) Quality coaching
Each competitive team will be training with a professional trainer/coach a minimum of two times per week throughout the entire season.
